What Does It Take to Transform Housing Into Hope?

Location

Farragut Houses, NYCHA, Brooklyn, New York

Project type

Architecture

This project focused on the redevelopment of the Farragut Houses, integrating principles of modern urban architecture. At its core, the design centers around a shared communal space that functions both as an interactive social hub and as the primary circulation path connecting all residential units. Positioned at the heart of the massing, this space is strategically designed to maximize natural daylight and ventilation, minimizing the presence of dark, uninviting zones.
Each apartment block incorporates deep poché walls, creating a layered threshold that evokes the feeling of moving through a forest. This spatial quality introduces a sense of mystery and discovery, transforming the user's experience and forging a unique relationship between the interior and the surrounding environment.
The project proposes a low-cost housing solution for the Farragut community, offering a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units on each floor. Every unit is complemented by private balconies and breakout spaces, encouraging moments of pause, connection, and engagement.
