Can Spatial Variation Transform a Learning Environment?
Location
Redhook, New York
Project type
Architecture
The narrative for this project was to design a middle school in RedHook. The studio began by taking design logics as our concept, and with the help of the design logic I started understanding the relation between the flat surfaces and the semi-flat surfaces. With this understanding I started
developing my massing strategy where the main concept is assembly of surfaces forming a whole mass. In order to create a path between them, the first threshold, which is the outside skin with small voids in it, connects to the second threshold, which is the inside skin. By connecting the inside skin to the following threshold, which has openings, space for light and ventilation is then created. In essence, the building’s form is determined by how the surfaces are joined together.
