Can Old Spaces Find New Purpose?
Location
Governor's Island, New York
Project type
Architecture
The core concept was founded on the principle of adaptive re-use, where new additions are added to the exisiting building and it’s elements. Existing timber is used which is merging with recycled concrete on the facade. By doing so the culture of an area will be alive and will create a bridge between the old and new. Secondly, the project repurposes removed building materials to create architectural features, while minimizing the use of virgin materials. A basement, first level, second story, and third storey make up the structure. The bed and living quarters are in the basement, exhibition space is on the first floor, and studio space is on the second floor. Overall, the design strategy was successful andhad aided in our understanding of therelationshipbetween the old and the new as well as how to combine the newly revised elements with the original features to provide the impression of a single component.
