What is a “Living machine”?

Location

Sunset Park, New York

Project type

Architecture

The project is driven by the potential of on-site composting and dirt production to revitalize the landscape. Central to this concept is the idea of ground-making, a dynamic process for reshaping the ground and waterline that is both intentional and natural. The project explores qualities in which grounds can be developed both formally and informally, positioning the design to operate somewhere in between.
Informally, the dirt circulated and ejected onto the site by a conveyor system, continuously shifts and transforms the landscape. These resulting mounds take on unique qualities, some are left to naturally evolve through erosion and various natural processes, while others are less permanent.
Central to this ecosystem is the careful management of water. The roofline is shaped to collect and channel rainwater to support the growth of our greenhouses and landscape.
This is what a Living machine is--- building a system that breathe and grow.
